Mike Carey exclusive to DC, new regular writer on Hellblazer

DC Comics announced Wednesday the signing of another creator to an exclusive contract, this time four-time 2001 Eisner-nominated, original Lucifer and new Hellblazer (issue #175) writer Mike Carey. The British writer has signed a two-year agreement with the publisher.

"With Lucifer, Mike's proven himself as a first-rate writer, deftly intertwining reality with an expansively-crafted mythology" said Karen Berger, Vice President - Executive Editor, Vertigo. "But what impresses me most about Mike's writing is his versatility. His first few scripts on Hellblazer show Constantine as raw, uncompromising and seductive as he's ever been. Mike's well on his way to establishing a new direction and a new voice for the series."

Speaking on the official Hellblazer message board, Mike Carey had the following to say about the planned length of his stay on Hellblazer (which was originally going to be for six issues)-

"I think I need to set the record straight here. Things have changed since I gave that interview, and since I posted that reply on the Hellblazer board. Brian has got a lot of other projects on the go, and there's much less chance now of him coming back to Hellblazer in the short term. As things stand, I'm going to carry on until he makes serious noises about coming back: it's probably going to be considerably longer than the originally planned six months. I'm saying this because I don't want any of Brian's fans - or any of the people who were drawn to Hellblazer recently because he was writing it - to feel that they were conned into staying on into my run on a false promise that he was going to return really soon. I think you'll hear well in advance when he does, but I also think it'll be a good while."

Mike followed up with this -

"The first six issues were planned to include kind of a set-up for something longer-term. If all went well I was going to return to some of the characters and situations in my second six-month run. Now I'm just carrying on without that break, so I've got it all worked out up to about fourteen months worth of stories."
