Swamp Thing #3 : Kill Your Darlings
Writer : Brian K. Vaughan
Artist : Richard Petersen
Tefe Holland travels aboard a fishing boat, surrounded by a less than
happy crew. First up we have the stuggling author lawrence, who has taken
his current employment in order to gain experience for his latest work - "Tempest Redux".
Lawrence has based the characters in his work around his fellow crew mates.
Next up is Hank, the most experienced fisherman amongst the crew, he is busy preparing everyone
for a coming storm. The ship's captain and his daughter Cheryl have a poor relationship and bicker
with each other as the storm approaches. Lawrence meanwhile, stalks the ship and observes the crew as
they go about their business - stumbling across the fact that Cheryl and Hank are lovers.
Driven mad by his inability to finish his book and fit Tefe's character within the confines of same,
Lawrence stabs Tefe with Hank's knife. As Cheryl finds Tefe's corpse, Lawrence hands the captain a note
written by Cheryl for Hank, explaining that she's pregnant with his child.
Believing that Tefe was murdered by Hank, the captain has him hanged. When the captain threatens to have
his daughter's child aborted when they reach dry land and now believing that he had Tefe killed, Cheryl snaps and
forces him to a watery grave. When Lawrence claims that Cheryl's father was with him all night and couldn't have
killed Tefe, Cheryl prepares to shoot herself in the head.
Chery's suicide is interrupted by an alive and well Tefe. Lawrence shoots Cheryl in the stomach before
Tefe throws him into a hold full of crabs. Tefe is able to save Cheryl's life but her child has been killed
by Lawrence's bullet.
