Paul Jenkins
Apart from HellBlazer, what other work have you done ?
Was an editor for years, starting with the TMNT, going through Tundra and
bloody Majestic (urgh!) HB was my first real writing gig. I did a couple of
Teknopages after Rick Veitch, recently did two issues of LOTDK, HB/BOM
crossover, some Vertigo short stories for Weird War and Winters Edge, other
bits and pieces...
Have you any future projects lined up ?
Yup. Werewolf By Night, for Marvel. I am *loving* working on this book.
Artist Leo Manco is both very cool and very talented. Also working on
Deadside with Ashley Wood -- a painted 4-issue series for Acclaim. I have a
couple of irons in the Vertigo fire for the future.
(Note : Since this interview, Paul has been dogged by bad look with Acclaim effectively going out of
business and Marvel cancelling Werewolf By Night. Things are looking up though and Paul is
currently garnering much overdue praise for his work on The Inhumans with artist Jae Lee.)
How long are you slated to stay with Hellblazer ?
Until my contract ends. Hehh...
Favourite issue/story arc of Hellblazer that you didn't write.
The one that Garth wrote about the WW2 fighter pilot.
Favourite issue/story arc of Hellblazer you did do.
Tie between issue #97 (where John appears to meet Jesus in a forest) and
issues 106-107 (In the Line of Fire).
Favourite work you've done outside of HellBlazer.
I'm pretty proud of the Batman story we did. I gave him a deathwish, and no
one complained. hehh...
When you eventually move on, who would you like to take your place at
the reigns of Hellblazer ?
Yikes. I have no idea.
What can we expect in the coming months for JC ?
Teddy bears and unicorns and fairies. Either that, or things will take a turn
for the worse... we shall see.
What title (Vertigo or otherwise) would you most like to write
(barring Hellblazer, natch) ?
Hmm... Silver Surfer? Anything with ghosts in it...
If you were told HellBlazer was too be cancelled - would JC ride off
into the sunset or bite the bullet - how
would you 'retire' the character ?
Sunset. If I killed him, he'd find out where I live and make me pay, the
bastard.
Artist you'd most like to work with outside of Philips and Pleece.
Kevin O'Neill, matter of fact. Don't know him, though.
Favourite drink ?
Murphys.
What (if any) football team do you support ? I'm an Evertonian
myself but enough of my problems........
Crystal Palace, what a surprise. Notice how they win one-nil in #101?
God - will we see him/her/it at all ? The First Of The Fallen's had
his shot - what about his ex-boss ?
Me, I think it'd be pretty cool. We did have ol' Jesus, or a reasonable
facsimile thereof in issue #97, so it's possible. But knowing the way things
work, unlikely.
