There's a fair load of old toss being talked about horror these days, isn't there ? You know,
all that nonsense about helping us to confront our own dark sides and face the shadows in our souls, so that we're better
equipped to handle the horrors that we come across in everyday life, etc. etc.
Yeah, right. When you watch Alien are you thinking "Blimey! What a brilliant examination of the secret terror we have
of our won bodies and the inherently sexual nature of death !" ? No, you're thinking "Hey, look ! It came right out of his chest ! Cool !".
When you watch An American Werewolf In London, you're thinking "Neat werewolf. Hahaha, that copper's head came clean off ! Oh look
Jenny Agutter's naked, how unusual !". And when you watch Dracula you're thinking "Come on, come on ! I paid good money for this !".
As for dealing with evil in everyday life, well, I had a quick flick through an issue of "Faust" recently and I'm sorry : I was still totally unpreparaed for the news that
"Rape Camps" had been set up in Central Europe for "ethnic cleansing.". Same went for a documentry on the Holocaust. I can find the answers to all this in "Nightbreed", can I ?
So, when I sat down to write the HELLBLAZER Special I had my own agenda in mind. I wanted a good story, with engaging characters and interesting situations. I wanted to do what I think a horror story
should do, which is freak the reader out good and proper. You know what that feels like - you're excited, your adrenaline's rising and you really want to see what happens next because you're fascinated by what you're
looking at. It doesn't matter whether you want something to think about or you just like seeing blood fly all over the place : you're enjoying yourself, and that's the main thing. So with a bit of luck, this story should freak you
out qyute nicely - John Constantine's heading for just about his nastiest adventure yet. And if you want something to chew over, that'll be there too. You'll never shave again...
I wouldn't want anyone other than Steve Dillon helping me tell this story, and good news - he's the man. Glenn Fabry will be gracing us wuth one of his incredible covers, and we'll also have a portfolio section, featuring some of your top-quality comics illustrators, such as Charles Bess, Steve Pugh, David Llyod, Richard Case, Phil Windslade and many more.
And editor extraordinaire Staurt Moore is so committed to this project that he's agrees to reply - personally, by handwritten letter - to anyone who disagrees with anything I've written in the past few paragraphs. Really, anything at all. He's a dedicated man.
Well, thanks for your time. And look, if you really must confront your own dark side and so on, try this : go down the pub, drink a dozen pints of Guinness, ask a friendly police office for directions home and then see how
dark it gets.
