Last night, I saw a screening of the movie Constantine up here in the bay area. It was touted by the people showing the screening as the final cut of the film being released next February. I was pleasantly surprise by what I saw. The movie kicked major ass and it's probably Keanu's best performance since the original Matrix.

The movie has been in the works for many years, and diehard fans of the series-of which I am definitely one-might have been skeptical about a dark-haired "yank" taking the place of Moore's blonde Brit from the comics. Since that American actor is Keanu Reeves, the most obvious reference point will obviously be "The Matrix," but having seen this footage, fans might be pleasantly surprised at how much of the flavor and tone of the comic books has been retained.

All in all, Other than a few good performances( Weisz and Hounsou in particular) the movie is not very good. Which is a real shame because it did have potential but with a miscast actor as the lead and the lead role being very good to begin with, the movie was doomed to fall flat on it's face.

The mood of the film almost the same of most of the postmodern films that has come out after the movie Seven. It's better than the recent movies to come out that have copied its style (the recent movie Saw) but like the rest, it does not come close. The script lacks balance and the dialog is a bit under handed but it's ok for what it is. Unfortunately the script is also bit predicable and a very cliche with every known scene that can be put in action/ horror hybrid.

So, other than a vague kernel of knowledge that Constantine was a Big Budget Warner Brothers comic adaptation I was totally in the dark about the film. I hadn't read the comics, and I hadn't even seen the trailer. In fact I came to work yesterday morning (at an unnamed Studio, not Warner Brothers), and could only get one person interested in going to the screening with me. Suffice it to say that Warner's as some pr work to do to get this movie out in the public consciousness beyond the comic/Internet crowd.

I must STRESS this was not the finished film, so I will not discuss various technical aspects which were obviously not worked heavily in postproduction (looping, inconsistent lighting in the same scene, etc.). I truly hope the people behind the film read this and consider these thoughts since there is never enough space on the surveys to really make decent comments, and those tiny pencils always seem to go blunt after about 2 words making writing an overly laborious chore. But, if the tester is this good, and they take a good hard look at the feedback, this could really turn out to be some great stuff.

Revenge of the Sloths, errr...Sith!!! Yeah!!! We need more crap in this world, because eventually - just maybe - we can get Satan to pop through the silver screen and make us all laugh so hard that we a'splode.

Free movie Tuesday? Why not? We've all done it. waiting in that line. I had no idea then that I was about to be apart of something much much bigger. As I'm sitting there with my writing partner watching Keanu fight bugs and deliver lines that shouldn't be uttered in a 4th grade classroom play, I realized what was going on.
